Neighborhood
This beautiful property is the perfect base for exploring South Iceland and the iconic Golden Circle, offering a luxurious retreat surrounded by stunning natural beauty. No matter the season, the area’s rich landscapes and cultural landmarks provide endless opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences. Just a short drive from the cabin, the Golden Circle awaits—a 300 km (186-mile) route showcasing three of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Start with the Geysir Geothermal Area, where bubbling hot springs and erupting geysers create a dramatic display of geothermal power, with the famous Strokkur geyser shooting water high into the air every few minutes. Next, marvel at the mighty Gullfoss Waterfall, where glacial waters cascade into a rugged canyon, creating a spectacular scene year-round. Finally, explore Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in history and geological wonders, where you can literally walk between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia. For a unique Icelandic experience, visit Friðheimar, located nearby. Famous for its greenhouse-grown tomatoes, Friðheimar offers a one-of-a-kind restaurant where you can dine among the lush plants, enjoying dishes crafted from the freshest produce. They’ve recently added a beautiful wine bar, the perfect spot to unwind with a glass of wine after a day of exploring. The farm also specializes in Icelandic horse breeding, and you can catch an incredible horse show to learn more about this unique part of Icelandic culture. Just 5 minutes away, you’ll find Mika Restaurant, known for its delicious wood-fired pizzas, fresh local ingredients, and mouthwatering handmade chocolates. It’s a great spot for a cozy meal in between your adventures. For your convenience, there’s also a grocery store nearby, perfect for picking up any essentials during your stay. If you’re up for more sightseeing, head 20 minutes north to Faxi Waterfall (also known as Vatnsleysufoss), nestled along the Tungufljót river. Though smaller than Gullfoss, Faxi offers its own quiet charm with a scenic picnic area, a small car park, and the nearby Vid Faxa restaurant—perfect for a relaxed lunch. The waterfall is also a popular fishing spot, known for its abundant salmon. For a touch of Icelandic history, visit Skálholt, just a 10-minute drive from the cabin. This historic site was once the cultural and religious heart of Iceland, set along the banks of the Hvítá river. If you’re in the mood for more nature, head 20 minutes south to Lake Apavatn, a peaceful, expansive lake ideal for fishing, surrounded by serene views that capture the essence of Iceland’s untouched beauty. Beer enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to Ölvisholt Brewery, a microbrewery located on an old dairy farm in South Iceland. Founded in 2007 by two neighboring farmers with a passion for craft beer, Ölvisholt offers brewery tours and a welcoming taproom where you can sample their unique Icelandic brews.
